For some, self-employment is a meaningful career choice. For others, it's short-term help. How does under-employment affect the self-employed? I will write on paper everything I learned.
Self-employment is slowly on the rise in the United States, as more and more professionals find ways to make money on their own terms. But it’s through the roof in India, where more than half of the workforce is identified as self-employed. Gallup, a leading polling source in the U.S., classifies under-employed professionals as those who are unemployed or working part-time in lieu of full-time work. In 2021, approximately 19% of working Americans were considered under-employed. Data shows that they experience daily worry and sadness; one in four felt sadness as recently as the day before the survey was taken. Cases of depression are higher among the under-employed as well.
Competition in the Workforce
All self-employment markets are extremely competitive. Candidates respond to self-employment job offers quickly, and some sites actually specialize in pitting workers against each other so they may attempt to out-bid their competition for available projects. Under-employed professionals who are simply seeking extra money add even more competition to the mix, making it more difficult for dedicated freelancers and independent professionals to find opportunities.
